Am I a good candidate for the surgery?

Your visit with Dr. Rohrich will determine if you are a good candidate. Sculptra™ restores the lost volume associated with facial lipoatrophy through a gradual increase in dermal thickness. Facial lipoatrophy is the loss of fat that supports the fullness, shape and contour of the face.

Before you decide to have surgery, think carefully about your expectations and discuss them with Dr. Rohrich during your consultation.

What should I expect from my consultation?

During the consultation, you will be asked how you feel about your appearance and anything else that you feel is important. You will learn about the surgery, its limitations and risks, and discuss your needs and concerns. Dr. Rohrich will explain which surgical techniques and fillers are most appropriate for you. He will carefully analyze your face and lips to make them proportionate and aesthetically pleasing. After your consultation a photographer will take photographs for your medical record and you will meet with Dr. Rohrich's patient coordinator to discuss surgery fees and scheduling dates. You may also schedule an additional consultation to view computer imaging so that you can visualize the results of surgery that Dr. Rohrich has specifically designed for you.

Dr. Rohrich will review your medical history and check for conditions that may cause problems during or after the procedure. You should provide any information about any medical conditions, drug allergies, medical treatments you have received, previous surgeries and medications that you currently take. It is important for you to provide complete information.

What is Sculptra™ and how are the injections performed?

Treatment of Sculptra™ is performed by multiple sessions . The number of sessions will vary by patient. A specified amount of Sculptra is injected and assessed two weeks later to monitor the dermal thickening. Additional amounts are added until the desired effect is achieved.

The injections usually takes 30 minutes to an hour to perform. Be sure to arrange for someone to drive you home.

How safe is Sculptra™?

Sculptra™ is a safe, synthetic, and biocompatible material that is injected below the surface of the skin in the area of fat loss. It provides a gradual and significant increase in skin thickness, improving the appearance of folds and sunken areas. No skin testing is required.

What should I know about my results?

The initial skin volume that is seen immediately following treament represents mostly water and edema and usually disappears within the week. The building effects of Sculptra™ is slow and gradual. Gradual dermal thickening appears after a minimium of two weeks. Effects of Sculptra™ have been shown to last up to two years.

Mild and even tissue distention is to be expected throughout the treament areas. You will have some minor discomfort the first 24 to 48 hours following the surgery. The areas treated will need to be massaged for even distribution. Ice packs can be used to reduce swelling. You will be given a prescription for a pain medication to be taken as directed or Tylenol extra strength may be sufficient to lessen the discomfort. The swelling will decrease over the next 7 to 10 days. You will have swelling, reddness and bruising, typically resolving within two weeks Most patients are able to return to work within the first week. During your initial consultation the areas to be treated will be determined and a fee quote per treatment session will be given to you. This fee involves the cost of the procedure, topical anasthetic if necessary, and postoperative visits.
